Muzine gehören zur großen und komplexen Gruppe der Kohlenhydrate. Muzine sind Mukopolysaccharide. Sie sind wichtig für das Überleben und Wachstum der Zellen, da sie den Nährstofffluss zwischen Kapillaren und Zellen regulieren.
Routinefärbungen, allen voran die H&E-Färbung, und Spezialfärbungen erlauben die Darstellung ansonsten transparenter Zellen und Gewebe sowie deren Identifikation und Beurteilung unter dem Mikroskop, woraus sich ihr unschätzbarer Wert für die Diagnosestellung ergibt.
