Apolipoprotein J (Clusterin) Novocastra
Clusterin is also known as apolipoprotein J, complement lysis inhibitor, gp80, glycoprotein III, SGP-2, SP 40, TRPM2 and T64. It is a ubiquitous, multifunctional protein of 80 kD comprising of two disulfide-linked subunits, alpha and beta. It is implicated in numerous biological processes including sperm maturation, lipid transport, regulation of the complement cascade, membrane recycling, cell death, immune regulation, cell adhesion and morphological transformation. In pathological conditions, it is an amyloid-associated protein co-localizing with fibrillar deposits in systemic and localized amyloid disorders. In Alzheimer's disease, clusterin is reported to be present in amyloid plaques and cerebrovascular deposits. In breast cancers, clusterin expression is reported to be correlated with tumor size and, when upregulated, correlated inversely with apoptotic index. This suggested that clusterin expression was not a prerequisite to cellular death by apoptosis.
