From patient to pathologist, preparing tissue specimens for histological examination requires care, skill and sound procedures. This guide provides practical advice on best-practice techniques and simple ways to avoid common errors.

The aim of this publication is to promote an awareness of the various artifacts which may be encountered in histopathology, to provide a guide for their recognition, to explain their causes and to suggest, where possible, the means by which their occurrence can be avoided.

This booklet has been prepared as a training aid for newcomers to microtomy and paraffin section preparation and as a refresher course for more experienced histologists. It covers the essential elements for set-up and safe operation of a rotary microtome to prepare paraffin sections.
